"The pictures in this book are primarily the result of the current economic climate – not particularly in terms of imagery or subject matter but more in the fact that i've had time on my hands. I'm an illustrator, an unashamed commercial artist, what does an illustrator do when the commissions stop coming in – after all, the first things to disappear in a recession are inventive advertising and bespoke images?
The words in this book are the result of my desire to put my images to work. An image was selected at random and sent to a collection of friends, writers, students and colleagues who were asked to write something with the image in mind – a reversal of the usual illustration process if you like. I did not want a review. I wanted to commission in the way I like to be commissioned – a 'just do what you do' approach. I wasn't allowed to intervene at any stage – the interest for me is in the writers interpretation and whether they captured the essence of the image or simply ploughed on with a personal agenda. Some of the text fits perfectly, some of it doesn't, i'm fine with all that."
